Overall, in my opinion, Middle Tennessee State University was the better school visit because the campus was clean, the tour guides were nice to us, and the food was better. What I liked about the MTSU campus was the buildings were very nice, the dorms were centrally located and co-ed, the campus was clean and seemed to be a good environment. For example, when we went into the College of Mass Communication, we got to see the radio station, the television station, and the animation studio, where the students got to work on projects like for DreamWorks, which is known for its How to Train Your Dragon series, and Pixar which is known for movies like Finding Nemo. Next, the three tour guides at MTSU were very helping and gave us a lot of information, where everything was and how it worked. Because our tour guides were also students, they shared their own student experiences and showed us everything from the health center to the DMV. The tour guides were really friendly and answered all our questions.  The foot we were given at MTSU was good. We had a variety of foods available to us in their McCallie cafeteria, including pizza, home cooked food, burgers and sandwiches, and desserts like ice cream, cookies, Jell-O™, and cakes. Finally, I’m planning on apply to MTSU for college because I think it will be a good place for me. They have the best nursing college with a competent staff of teachers, and the environment seemed like a good one for learning.

Austin Peay State University was the better school visit because we got to see the campus buildings from the inside, like the dorms and the admissions building, not just the outside, the tour guides spoke up and weren’t afraid to interact with the students, and the dining experience was healthier. What I liked about APSU’s campus tour was that we were allowed inside the buildings like when we went inside the science building we saw artifacts like the alligator snapping turtle and the peacock, as well as the “Elements CafĂ©” where they designed the menu to look like periodic table of elements, and the classroom was comfortable with good chairs, laptops, and electrical outlets so students can charge up their pads, laptops, or cell phones while listening to lectures. At APSU, the two tour guides did a great job showing us around. They answered all our questions, including telling us about student life which included everything from telling us about the sororities and fraternities, telling us how it would be to work on and off campus, and describing what we could expect from professors, classes, and homework. The food boxes at APSU were healthy and included grilled chicken sandwiches, veggie wraps, and roast beef. The meal also came with chips, a pickle, and a cookie. We were given bottled water and got a chance to win more than one food box thanks to Mr. Bethune’s college trivia. Overall, in my opinion, I intend to apply to APSU which will be a good school for me because not only is it closer to home, but also as a freshman, I would get to stay on campus and have a car.

MSA at Whites Creek High School: College Hoops Game

MSA Ballin’ at Whites Creek:
by Daniel Yarlett

On Friday, June 26, 2015, the Mayor’s Scholars Academy at Whites Creek High School hosted an intramural basketball tournament between student players for Austin Peay and MTSU. Daniel Yarlett was representing Middle Tennessee State University and Khaleel Dye was representing Austin Peay State University. Ms. Hicks-McCall coached Austin Peay’s team, while Ms. Hilton coached the MTSU’s team. Ms. Hilton had so much faith in her players that she put her hair on the line, betting players from the opposite team that if they beat her all-star players, she would allow them to cut her ponytail off.
Austin Peay started off strong, forcing MTSU to a 9-22 deficit before the end of the first period. But MTSU came back during the second period to tie the game at 41-41 with a crucial, but controversial, three-pointer. With seconds left on the clock, MTSU takes the ball down the court Micah Freeman throws up a three to try to tie the game and clinks it off the rim, but PJ Johnson was there with the rebound, pump fakes the ball throwing Trinity Carney off balance, and shoots an off-balance, buzzer-beater tying the game and forcing the game into OT, where MTSU lost to Austin Peay.
Crooked refs are the speculated reason behind Austin Peay’s slim victory.

A victory is still a victory. Now where are those scissors, Ms. Hilton? (drops mic and walks off stage)

Khaleel Dye is a junior at Antioch High School Digital Arts and Design. He wants to go to Full Sail University in Tampa, Florida.

Daniel Yarlett is a junior at Whites Creek High School in the Community Health. He wants to study entrepreneurship and business at Penn State in State College, Pennsylvania.

College Reflections

My overall impression about the college is that it was fun and I could tell that the students were glad to be at that college .I can see myself attending this college because they have a lot of events and they stay busy. The thing that I liked best was that the games were free for students, which means that they don’t have to come out of pocket for home games. I didn’t like that they didn’t have a certain sorority, there were some that I haven’t even heard of. I would like more about scholarships because I don’t want to leave my parents with a fee that I know they will struggle paying for. This visit will make me think smart about what I do in high school because what happens there will affect what happens in college, or where I decide to work in the future. I would apply to a college like this because they won’t charge you anything to apply and it doesn’t take a lot to get in, you just have to work for it.

My overall impression on this college was it’s a pretty good school. They have good academics and they offer good programs. They also offer really good scholar ships. But this would be like a second or third option. I would attend a college like this one though I like the University of Tennessee better. I would attend this college because it is a good school. What did I like best about the college? The beat thing that I liked about the college I that it was nice, offered good scholar ships, and had good sports. They also had programs that I liked. The least thing that I liked was that their football team is not good. The college I attend has to have good academics and a good football team. So the least thing that I liked about it was the football team being bad.  The main thing that I want to know more about the college is that how good is their military program. Also, what kind of benefits can they offer me? How good are the people there?  I will apply to it because they have good academics and it’s a nice school. If I don’t get in the college then I will apply to another college that is like it.

MSA at Whites Creek 2015: Howling about “The Wolfpack”

Howling about “The Wolfpack” By Jyzy Stanton and Marlecia Allen

Austin Peay State athletics     After seeing the movie “The Wolfpack” at the Belcourt Theater, we thought the movie was kind of sad because the Angulo children were stuck in the apartment for over a decade and only had each other to depend on for friendship and socialization. Overall, the movie was about a dysfunctional family who were stuck in an apartment together with a tyrannical, bizarre father. The mother was submissive and abused by the father; a fact that was witnessed by at least one of the older Angulo sons. The name Wolfpack was a good name for the brothers because they had each others’ backs; they stuck together. The movie showed a lot of family values because the boys didn’t fight or cause trouble for one another. They thought that it was them against the world, but in the end they decided they were against the father, not the world. The most disturbing scenes in the family were with the father: the way he treated them, the way he made them kiss him (on the mouth), as well as the way they were isolated from the outside, and the way they didn’t seem to have any health or dental care. For all they lacked, the boys seemed to be well-groomed, knew how to cook, and were masters of arts and crafts, which was clear in the way they recreated the scenes, scripts, and costumes from the movies they loved. If there’s one moral of the story with “The Wolfpack” it’s that we should be grateful for every little thing that we have. Even if it seems like parents are being over-protective or overboard, they are not as bad as the Wolfpack’s parents. Ultimately, “The Wolfpack” was a good movie which showed a different way of living from the way we live. The movie should be rated five out of five stars.
