On Friday, June 26,
2015, the Mayor’s Scholars Academy at Whites Creek High School hosted an
intramural basketball tournament between student players for Austin Peay and
MTSU. Daniel Yarlett was representing Middle Tennessee State University and
Khaleel Dye was representing Austin Peay State University. Ms. Hicks-McCall
coached Austin Peay’s team, while Ms. Hilton coached the MTSU’s team. Ms.
Hilton had so much faith in her players that she put her hair on the line,
betting players from the opposite team that if they beat her all-star players,
she would allow them to cut her ponytail off.
Austin Peay started off
strong, forcing MTSU to a 9-22 deficit before the end of the first period. But
MTSU came back during the second period to tie the game at 41-41 with a
crucial, but controversial, three-pointer. With seconds left on the clock, MTSU
takes the ball down the court Micah Freeman throws up a three to try to tie the
game and clinks it off the rim, but PJ Johnson was there with the rebound, pump
fakes the ball throwing Trinity Carney off balance, and shoots an off-balance,
buzzer-beater tying the game and forcing the game into OT, where MTSU lost to
Austin Peay.
Crooked refs are the
speculated reason behind Austin Peay’s slim victory.

A victory is still a victory. Now where are those
scissors, Ms. Hilton? (drops mic and walks off stage)
